Internship Program

At Catalyst Counseling, we believe that guiding and nurturing emerging clinicians is just as important as providing high-quality clinical care to our community. This dual commitment defines the heart of the Catalyst Internship Program, a world-class training experience designed to support the personal and professional growth of associate clinicians as they begin their careers.

Each week, interns meet for an hour of supervision with two seasoned supervisors who bring over 50 years of combined clinical experience to the table. These sessions are a space for real conversations, clinical guidance, and professional development. Interns also participate in weekly meetings with two experienced associate-level counselors for active clinical skills practice and experiential learning where curiosity and connection are key.

Weekly supervision and training will include didactic learning on topics such as developing a strong and resilient therapeutic alliance throughout the arc of therapy, suicide risk assessment and intervention using the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide, developing deeper knowledge of therapeutic modalities and interventions, case conceptualization, neurobiology of safety, attachment, ethics and legal expectations, best practices in documentation, and a general understanding of when to consult.  And because we know the value of personalized support, each intern is paired with an individual mentor for the full year. Mentors are there to cheer you on, challenge your growth, and walk with you through the ups and downs of becoming a therapist.

Students will be expected to attend weekly supervision as well as weekly practical training throughout their practicum and internship experience.

Supervision - Each week, interns meet for an hour of supervision with two seasoned supervisors who bring over 50 years of combined clinical experience to the table.  These sessions are a space for real conversations, clinical guidance, and professional development. Interns also participate in weekly meetings with two experienced associate-level counselors for active clinical skills practice and experiential learning where curiosity and connection are key.

Practical Training - Initially, interns would be paired with an advanced associate-level counselor to either shadow/observe or provide co-therapy services. Once they have become familiarized with the practice, they would be expected to slowly build a caseload of their own clients along with completing progress notes, coordinate care as needed.

To support growth at a steady and manageable pace, interns are matched with clients experiencing low to moderate acuity concerns. This intentional matching helps build confidence while ensuring clinical skills develop thoughtfully over time. Interns will work up to 12 clients per week, meeting the 600 direct service hours required by CACREP, without the risk of burnout so often experienced by novice counselors.

The Catalyst Internship Program is not only a training ground but a transformative space where emerging clinicians are supported to become thoughtful, ethical, and grounded practitioners ready to serve their communities with confidence and care.
